The Association was established in 1964 on the initiative of several prominent companies in East Africa who became founder members. At the request of firms operating in Mauritius, the Association's sphere of activity was extended to that country in 1967 and in subsequent years coverage has been extended to include Seychelles, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Burundi and Rwanda.
Membership now embraces some 300 companies from a number of countries - representing banking, insurance, manufacturing, trading, mining and agriculture, transport and shipping, publishing, the petroleum industry and the professions.
Members include large multi-nationals and very small companies from the UK, Europe,
the USA, South Africa and India
The Association exists to facilitate participation in the economic development of Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean region by overseas firms, companies and individuals to the mutual benefit of the countries concerned and its own members. To this end the Association acts as a channel of communication between overseas business and governments, interpreting to its members the policies and objectives of governments and in turn explaining to governments the views and needs of overseas investors, prospective investors and foreign business generally. It seeks:
to represent and sustain existing
foreign private investment in the countries covered by its activities.
to co-operate with their Governments
in promoting and encouraging new private investment.
to assist members in the successful
conduct of their business
